Beginning on Aug. 25, crews will beginning constructing an additional driveway that will improve traffic flow around the building. Library supporters and board members have been rallying for a new driveway for what is believed to be 40 years.
Upon the sale of the Number One School in July 2007, David Neuberg, the developer who purchased the property to construct luxury condos, granted the library an easement of 12 feet on the west side of the building.
When the school district held ownership of both the library and the former Number One School properties, they consistently balked at the idea of granting an easement, officials have said.
"I am excited that we are finally able to make the library visit by patrons a safer and more enjoyable experience," said Janet Schneider, president of the Peninsula Public Library Board of Trustees.
There is currently a single lane that acts as both the exit and entrance for cars utilizing the library's parking lot in the back.
Even though the library board is working with engineers and architects to present more finalized plans to the village board for the eventual construction of a new library in the Lawrence train station parking lot, the addition of the driveway is something that officials have labeled as a safety issue that requires immediate attention.
The cost of construction will be funded through a state education grant and a capital improvement fund, Schneider said.
Because of construction, the library's parking lot will be closed for four weeks, starting on Aug. 25.
