New faces, familiar places

Much as the late-summer winds are picking up steam, so, too, children are picking up backpacks and back-to-school gear. As they head back to classrooms, students in the West Hempstead School District will find that many changes await them this year.
Two new administrators will take the helm in the district. James Grosanne, who served as the middle school principal in the Locust Valley School District, will take over as assistant superintendent. And Thomas Lee will be the new principal at West Hempstead High School. Prior to coming to West Hempstead, Lee was assistant principal at Garden City High School for five years, and he has served as chairman of numerous high school evaluation committees for the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Most recently, Lee chaired a visiting committee to evaluate Pennsbury High School in Pennsylvania.
As far as curriculum changes are concerned, the district will implement a district-wide, everyday math program for third-graders. Technological changes include upgrades in the high school labs and new computers in the kindergarten center and fourth-grade classrooms.
In an effort to help teachers in the classroom at the middle school, a new attendance and grading system has been integrated with the student administration system.
Although no major construction is scheduled for the school year, there are two notable upgrading projects, including extensions on existing playground equipment at the Cornwell Avenue and George Washington elementary schools.
