New teachers, Spanish to open Bellmore school year

In a brief meeting on August 8, the Bellmore School District Board of Education announced the appointment of several teachers toward the opening of schools on September 7.
The district will begin incorporating Spanish into the curriculum this year. To that end, Lisa Goldberg was appointed as a foreign language teacher last month, and at the August 8 meeting, the board added Dana D'Arrigo to the roster.
Also appointed were Laura Lee Griffith, an occupational therapist; and Susan Vollino, who will teach sixth grade at the Shore Road School. Daria Roulette was appointed as a resource room teacher; Jamie Bloom, art teacher at Winthrop Avenue School was given a medical leave of absence.
The board also took the first step toward figuring the tax rate for the coming school year.
First, the district must file with the Nassau County Board of Assessors and the State Department in Albany the amount of money it needs to run the elementary school district, the library, and the district's portion of the high school district.
From these figures, the county and the state determine the tax rate for each class of property. The final figures are handed down from the state and county and are not expected to be ready until later in the year.
