The New York Riptide made a pair of interesting trades leading up to Saturday night’s matchup with the Albany FireWolves at Nassau Coliseum and then thrilled a crowd of 4,967 with a dominant performance at both ends of the field.
The Riptide didn’t allow a goal in the second or fourth quarter and scored six straight in the first half on the way to a convincing 15-6 victory.
Callum Crawford had four goals and three assists, including the 700th helper of his career, rookie Jeff Teat added a hat trick, and goaltender Steve Orleman had 43 saves and an assist as New York won for the third time in four games to improve to 4-8 with six contests remaining. Joe Resetarits had one goal and four assists to lead Albany, which fell to 6-9.
“We talked pregame about minimizing the noise about the standings and playoff pushes and how tight the East is,” Riptide head coach Dan Ladouceur said. “This game raises some eyebrows.”
New York outscored Albany 5-0 in the second quarter and 4-0 in the fourth. Connor Kearnan added two goals and three assists. Jay Thorimbert had a highlight-reel takeaway and breakaway goal, and along with Damon Edwards, Leo Stouros and Darryl Robertson led a stellar defensive effort.
“We did a great job controlling their transition in the first half,” Ladouceur said. “The message at halftime was just to ‘continue what we’re doing.’”
The Riptide welcomed recent acquisitions defense/transition Brent Noseworthy, forward Tyler Digby and defenseman Ryan John to the lineup and all made significant contributions against Albany.
On March 14, the Riptide acquired Noseworthy and a 2022 fourth-round draft pick from the Buffalo Bandits in exchange for a 2024 first-round pick. The next day, New York recouped a first rounder in a deal with the Colorado Mammoth that also brought Digby and John in exchange for Tyson Gibson.
Noseworthy was selected in the first round, 12th overall), of the 2019 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft by Buffalo. “We have heard nothing but good things about Brent and the competitive edginess he plays with,” Riptide General Manager Jim Veltman said of Noseworthy. “We are bigger and better with him in our lineup.”
Digby rejoins the Riptide after posting 23 points on six goals and 17 assists in 10 games for Colorado. He appeared in 10 games with the Riptide last season and recorded 14 goals and 22 assists, while adding 30 loose balls.
John was selected in the second round (18th overall) in the 2020 Draft. In 10 career NLL games prior to the trade, John scooped 39 loose balls and caused five turnovers, while adding three assists.
“This was the hardest deal I’ve had to make in my short tenure as GM,” Veltman said. “Tyson is a quality person and a good lacrosse player. However, we felt the pieces we got back in this deal improves our deficiencies on offense and defense and maintains our draft equity. We welcome our new additions and wish Tyson all the best going forward.”
The theme for Saturday’s game was “Lacrosse is for Everyone.” Kids of all ages were welcome to participate in activities and test their lacrosse skills for the first time.
On Saturday, April 2, at 8 p.m. the Riptide host the Philadelphia Wings on Cystic Fibrosis Night. The teams already split a pair of matchups in Philadelphia. New York has a quick turnaround and a flight to Colorado for a matchup with the Mammoth next Monday in a game rescheduled from Dec. 31.
“We only need to worry about one game at a time and that’s the next one,” Ladouceur said.
