At the Covert elementary school, all classrooms are receiving new ceilings and electric wiring and lighting fixtures are being replaced. The fence that runs along Long Beach Road and part of the fence that borders the school is being replaced.
In Hewitt, hallway floor tiles have been replaced and new cabling for classroom lights and a new fire alarm system has been installed. Riverside is seeing new classroom and hallway lights as well as work on the boiler and piping for the water supply. The bathrooms at Watson are being renovated, the rough plumbing has been completed and the walls have been tiled. The main office in that building is having new carpeting installed. The work at Wilson is rather extensive: flooring in eight classrooms has been installed and polyurethane finish coats are being applied. Cabling for new classroom lights are in, and student bathrooms are being renovated. A new room at Wilson, across the hallway from the gym will be ready with an oven, sink, refrigeration unit and buffet table to accommodate the district's new cafeteria program in which each elementary school will now prepare its own lunches.
And at the middle school, which saw new windows installed last spring, the bathrooms are being retiled and the flooring replaced in the cafeteria and four classrooms. According to assistant superintendent Robert Bartels, the "crunch time" for completing all of the construction will come at the end of this month - just before students return to school after Labor Day.
