No Sanitary District 1 chometz drop off locations in the Five Towns

Sanitary District 1 Superintendent George Pappas said that after consulting with “many community leaders, and out of an abundance of caution,” there will no drop off locations at local Long Island Rail Road stations and synagogues of chometz, not-for-kosher items for Passover, because of the coronavirus pandemic

“As an alternative to protect the health of residents and workers,” Pappas stated in a letter, the district will provide what it calls “enhanced curbside collection” on Wednesday, April 8 and Thursday, April 9 from 7 a.m. to noon.

Pappas said that residents and other customers do not need to call S.D. 1 to receive the extra holiday service. Just put the trash on the curb and it will be picked up, he said. “Please remember to bag and tie all of your garbage to ensure the safety of our employees,” Pappas stated in the letter.

Sanitary District 1 provides municipal solid waste collection, recycling, transfer and disposal services to more than 50,000 residents and various commercial and institutional properties in the villages of Cedarhurst, Hewlett, Hewlett Bay Park, Hewlett Harbor, Hewlett Neck, Lawrence and Woodsburgh, Inwood and Woodmere, and portions of the unincorporated areas of Lynbrook and Green Acres.
