Joe Annarella says it's every little boy's dream to ride on a big, shiny fire truck and to help other people.
Some men outgrow their childhood dreams, but Annarella didn't.
The 44-year-old Island Park resident has been a volunteer firefighter for the IP department for the past 25 years.
And I'm still doing it, he said.
As are thousands of men and women across the country. In times of such horrible tragedies, such as those of Sept. 11, one wonders what drives people who have such high risks on the job.
A firefighter has no shortage of dedication, determination and perseverance.
It's hard work and it's time consuming, said Annarella, who served as an EMT for six years. But my theory is if you don't put yourself in the position to help other people, who will? If nobody does it, and says,
