Each week will cover various topics including diabetes overview, nutrition, activity and foot care, diabetes medications, blood glucose monitoring and complications. Group classes provide the opportunity for greater learning opportunities. Classes are taught by Mary Sweeney, RN, EdD, ANP/CDE, and adult nurse practitioner/certified diabetes educator.Classes will be held at NUMC, 2001 Hempstead Turnpike, East Meadow, in the TWC room first floor. Classes will be held Mondays from 6 to 8 p.m. from Sept. 8 to Oct. 20 and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon from Sept. 10 to Oct. 22. Participation is limited to 20 people in each series of classes. North Shore honors physician-professors
In a formal ceremony at C.W. Post that included a procession in academic robes, the North Short-Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Health System last month recognized the academic professorship of nine physicians who are spearheading endowed programs in such areas as pediatrics, women's health, behavioral health, general medicine, cardiology, ophthalmology and community health and education.The academic convocation was the first held since the 1997 merger of the North Shore Health System and LIJ Medical Center that created the 18-hospital North Shore-LIJ Health System. North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) in Manhasset and LIJ Medical Center serve as the teaching sites for 1,300 medical students, who rotate from one of the five medical schools, including the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and the New York University School of Medicine. "The academic convocation is a formal expression of the bond between clinical care and medicine's academic base," said Lawrence Scherr, MD, senior vice president for academic affairs, community health and public policy, who presided over the ceremony.Each professorship has a substantial endowment, funded by trustees of the North Shore-LIJ Health System - that supports the research, education and patient-care programs carried out by the recipients.In addition to nine professorships, Dr. Scherr was honored as the Betsey Cushing Whitney Dean and Chief Academic Officer of the North Shore-LIJ Health System. Sports for the Ladies
The Council of Leagues of Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre will sponsor and celebrate its 26th annual "Ladies Day of Sports" Golf and Tennis Outing. The event will be held on Monday, Aug. 11, at the Woodcrest Club in Syosset. This year, the medical center is excited to have the great "team" of chairladies spearheading the event. Joan Heller and Dory Barker will be serving as co-chairladies of the golf outing, Patti McDonald will be serving as chairperson of the tennis outing, and Daisy Czarnomski and Trudy Bloom will both be co-chairs of the luncheon. For 26 years, the council has held this outing to raise funds for Mercy. The proceeds of this year's outing will benefit the expansion and renovation of Mercy's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
