Douglas F. Edwards, of Valley Stream, died on Saturday, Jan. 23. He was 68.
Edwards was born to Franklyn Edwards and Mary Louie Bouvet, both lifelong residents of Long Island.
Edwards served in the U.S. Navy as a communications technician from 1970 to 1972, and advanced to the rank of third class petty officer in electro-magnetic research. He graduated from C.W. Post College of Long Island University in Brookville with a bachelor’s degree in political science and history, and later worked in the banking industry until 1990.
A member of the Valley Stream Republican Committee, Edwards received the first place committeeman’s plaque for 21 consecutive years from 1991 to 2011 for excellent election results in District 13 every November, as well as for fundraising for campaign expenses, monthly meetings and golf outings. He joined the Nassau County Department of Public Works as an assistant supervisor in 1990, then worked for the county Board of Elections as a budget manager until his retirement in 2012.
Edwards was a member of the Valley Stream Knights of Columbus, and served as head usher at Holy Name of Mary Church at the Sunday noon mass until he became ill in 2015. He enjoyed spending time at the family’s cottage in Lake George, swimming and boating.
Edwards is survived by his wife, Zenaida Mata-Edwards; his sister, Margaret Cronin, of Pennslyvania; his niece, Elizabeth, of New Jersey; his nephew, John, of New York City; and their children, Katie, Caroline and Anna Victoria.
