Obituary: Robert R. Cammann, Jr., 62

Robert R. Cammann, Jr., 62, died on May 7, 2012. Cammann was born in Freeport, Long Island, a son of Alice (McCracken) Cammann of Baldwin, and the late Robert R. Cammann Sr. He was the grandson of Jacob H. Cammann, of Baldwin.

Cammann graduated from Baldwin High School in 1967 and entered the U. S. Army. He served in the Infantry 1st Cavalry Division during the Vietnam War and was the recipient of several citations including the Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant. Cammann attended Nassau Community College. He was a Freeport homeowner for many years, employed at the Bellmore office of the U. S. Postal Service as a letter carrier. He represented the Postal Worker’s Union for many years.

Cammann’s love of hunting in the Adirondack Mountains led to his decision to leave Long Island. He transferred to the Utica Post Office and moved to Stratford, N.Y.

Following his retirement he was employed at Herkimer Community College in Herkimer, N.Y. Cammann was a member of the Salisbury Ridge Runners and the Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed listening to doo-wop music, restoring antique cars, snow mobiling, fishing and hunting for bear, deer, turkey, pheasant and rabbits. He also enjoyed attending NASCAR races.

Cammann is survived by his wife, Mary Beth, mother, Alice Cammann, and stepdaughter, Tracy. Additional survivors include six sisters and two brothers; Alicia (Richard) Grice, Kathie Cammann, Susie (Billy) Sheehan and Donna (Ronny) Ippolito, all from Long Island, Mary (Bob) Casazza and Richard (Ellen) Cammann of Florida, Michael Cammann of Colorado and Ginny (Norman) Walters of Washington state. He is also survived by seven nieces, three

nephews, nine grandnieces, three grandnephews and many life-long friends.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Francis DeSales Church in Herkimer, N.Y. on May 11. Military honors were accorded by the U.S. Army at the conclusion of mass.

Cammann always maintained his love for Long Island, visiting family and friends often, celebrating Christmas Eve at his mom’s home in Baldwin, and surfcasting off Montauk, Fire Island and Jones Beach. On Saturday, August 4, family and friends of Cammann will meet for a Memorial Gathering at Jones Beach State Park, Field 6 (east side) at 8:30 a.m. to celebrate his life. They welcome anyone who knew Cammann to come share a brief story or anecdote.

The family say Cammann’s spirit will live amongst them and is a peaceful, easy feeling. They say he lived life to the fullest and that his favorite saying was, “GIT R DONE.”
