Exotic “Tropicals”
The Oceanside Garden Club welcomes Jenny Ulsheimer, Director of Horticulture at Clark Botanical Gardens, who will bring colorful samples plus her expert advice on cultivating these vibrant flowers on April 14 at 7 p.m.
“Passport” To Summer
Apply for your family’s passports on April 17 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and visit the Town of Hempstead’s mobile passport van located across the street from the Oceanside Library.
Extended Basic Computer Skills
Beginner students will learn basic computer skills and operations including mouse skills, keyboard techniques, Internet surfing, and file management applications such as saving and retrieving files. The five-Tuesday program starts April 14 from 10-11:30 a.m. There is a $50 registration fee.
Hearing Loss Seminar
Hearing Loss Association of America, South Nassau Chapter will present, Dr Jan Miller, Au.D. noted Audiologist, who will discuss the latest advances in hearing aids and requests that attendees bring questions on April 16 at 7:30 p.m. Miller is prepared to cover as many questions as time allows.
PowerPoint Classes
Experienced computer users will learn how to create slide presentations for both business and school including outlines and rich backgrounds for eye-catching slides. The classes will be held on April 14, 21 and 28 from 7-8:30 p.m. There is a $30 fee.
Child Safety ID Program
Obtain a free photo ID and Child Safety Kit in the Town of Hempstead’s mobile van located across the street from the Oceanside Library on April 17 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Open Mic Poetry Afternoon
In recognition of National Poetry Month, poet Peter V. Dugan of the North Sea Poetry Scene hosts this inspiring event with special guests George Northrup and Barbara Raeher-Myers on April 19 at 2 p.m.

Spring Magic Craft and Movie
For ages 5-10. Find the magic of spring and enjoy a fairy tale adventure with Ms. Meghan on April 13 from 2-3:30 p.m. We will have stories, crafts, film and snacks. Register in the Children’s room.
Adult Book Club
The Island Park Book Club will discuss “Wait Till Next Year” by Doris Kearns Goodwin on April 13 from 7-8:30 p.m. Set on Long Island in the 1950s, the book is Pulitzer Prize winner Doris Kearns Goodwin’s touching memoir of growing up in love with her family and baseball.
Spring Break Out - Rock Band
For ages 8 and up. Rock Band 2 lets players interact with music in a new way. The library will set up multiple systems that will let players jam out as some of the best guitarists, bassists, drummers and singers of all time on April 14 from 2-4 p.m. There will be prizes and snacks. Register early in the Children’s room.
Dem Bums! History of the Brooklyn Dodgers
Marty Adler, founder of the Brooklyn Dodgers Hall of Fame, will present an evening of anecdotes and photographs of the New York baseball team and life in Brooklyn on April 17 at 7 p.m. See photos of the Dodgers’ legendary greats: Pee Wee Reese, Duke Snider, Gil Hodges, Roy Campanella — and many more. To get into the mood for baseball season, the Library will serve “popcorn, peanuts and Cracker Jacks.” Register at the Circulation Desk.
Fruit and Vegetable Art with Rona Madri
For ages 5-10. Learn how to make artwork for the table out of fruit and vegetables on April 15 at 3 p.m. Participants will use safe tools to carve, chop and shape fruit and vegetables into animals, funny faces, or anything else their imaginations desire. Register in the Children’s room.

Summer Playground Registration
Late registration for Oceanside’s Summer Playground will run May 4-June 5, where an additional $30 per child will be charged. For more information, call the Dept. of Community Activities office at 594-2336.
Town Hall Meeting in Oceanside
Hempstead Senior Town Councilman Anthony Santino will bring Town Hall to Oceanside and Island Park by hosting a town meeting on April 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Oceanside Middle School, 186 Alice Ave. Representatives from many Town of Hempstead departments will be on-hand at the meeting to discuss any issues concerning Oceanside and Island Park residents.
Bird Walk in Oceanside
Join the South Shore Audubon Society for a Bird Walk at the Oceanside Marine Nature Study Area, on April 19 from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The Bird Walk is free of charge. Walk leaders and other birders and nature enthusiasts will be happy to share their knowledge and experience. In addition to resident populations, bird migrations are underway. Bring binoculars. Rain will cancel the bird walk.
“Seeing the Jewish World through Latin American Eyes”
Temple Avodah Life Learning will host CUNY Professor Nora Glickman presenting “Seeing the Jewish World through Latin American Eyes:” on April 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the Temple Avodah, 3050 Oceanside Road. Free Seminar: Monitoring Your Heart After A Heart Attack
A free seminar hosted by South Nassau Communities Hospital, 1 Healthy Way in Oceanside, and presented by Frank Pollaro, MD, cardiologist, on April 21 at 7:30 p.m. The seminar will be held in South Nassau’s Conference Center B. J.P. Somersaulter Presents Lights, Camera, Action
Internationally acclaimed filmmaker J.P. Somersaulter will take kids on a humorous, interactive journey through the techniques of simple animation and filmmaking on April 14 from 2-3 p.m. He’ll blend character voices with an historical examination of cartoon animation and show how math and writing skills play an important role in filmmaking. Audience members will help demonstrate the animation process with puppets and other fun animation tools. The event is best suited for ages 5 and up. Tickets are $8 in advance and $9 at the door. HBO’s documentary film-
“The Memory Loss Tapes”
This HBO-produced documentary takes an intimate look into the lives of seven individuals living with Alzheimer’s, each in an advanced state of dementia across the full spectrum of the progression of the disease. The showing will be on April 29 from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Light refreshments and a question and answer session will follow the film.
First Annual “Try”-athalon
Distance will be measured in 20 minute intervals in running, biking, and swimming on April 26. All activities take place at Friedberg JCC Health, Fitness and Aquatics Center.  Prizes to be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. Light refreshments and t-shirt will be provided. Proceeds to benefit Friedberg JCC and Sunrise Day Camp. Space is limited.  Advance registration suggested. Registration begins at 1:30 p.m., and the events run from 2 to 3:30.
