Oceanside School District adjusts spring, summer programs

With schools closed for the remainder of the academic year, Oceanside School District is adjusting its schedule and programs for spring and summer.

The last day of online school for students is June 12, Superintendent Dr. Phyllis Harrington said in a video message to the community on Friday.

Moving up ceremonies for elementary school 6th graders and middle school 8th graders have moved to a virtual format and will be complemented with car parades to celebrate. “Our principals will be sending something out within the next day or so about those special events,” Harrington said. “How sad and sorry we are that we could not be there to celebrate with those young people.”

High school seniors will have some sort of modified, live graduation ceremony, with details to be confirmed in the coming week.

Harrington also announced that the Department of Community Activities (DOCA) has canceled its summer playground program because it would not meet “all the requirements we’re being held to at this particular time.”

“We know how that impacts so many children,” she said, “our youngest ones to even our kids who work the program and count on it every summer.”

The district is working on putting together remote summer learning experiences, the details of which have yet to be revealed. This includes plans for the district’s extended school year program for special education students.
