With family, friends, coaches, fellow soccer players and well-wishers from the community cheering them on, the South Side High School boys- and girls- varsity soccer teams played their season-opening games. The girls played first, at 6 p.m., beating rival Garden City 3-1. The boys played next, under the lights, taking their first game against Long Beach by a score of 1-0.
A ceremony between games honored each club player who participated in the Olympic Development Program/Select over the summer, and each team from the club that finished first in their division or was recognized for sportsmanship.
The South Side High School Booster Club, as usual, handled refreshments and sold T-shirts and other items, with proceeds benefiting the group-s athletic scholarship awards, presented each June.
The evening highlighted the close partnership among the soccer club, the school district and local boosters. The soccer club has approximately 2,000 members ranging in age from 5 to 23. Last year it started a Tots Program for 4-year-old future soccer stars. Registration for the soccer season will begin soon. Go to rvcsoccer.net for more information.
