Li and fellow team member Amardeep Greewal of Michigan will now compete in the national finals at New York University Dec. 2-5, where the sixth- through first-place prizes range from $10,000 to $100,000.
Li will be competing against the top individual and the top team selected from each of six regions across the country.
The winners of the Middle States regional finals at Carnegie Mellon University on Nov. 18-19 - an individual winner from John F. Kennedy High School in Bellmore-Merrick and the team winners from John F. Kennedy High School in Plainview-Old Bethpage - are the only other Long Island students competing in the national finals.
Li's research project, conducted at SUNY-Stony Brook under mentoring physician-scientist Dr. Richard Clark, is entitled "A New Spin on Wound Healing Scaffolds: Optimization Through Molecular and Physical Design."
"The goal of this research is to facilitate the healing of chronic wounds, such as those from diabetes, fire and combat," said Li.
