Seated Tai Chi & Qi Qong - Although Tai Chi is traditionally practiced standing up, you can experience similar benefits,says workshop leader Juith Weitz. Tai Chi practiced in a chair will tone and stretch your muscles without putting stress on your knees, feet, thighs or back. It is a good form of exercise for everyone, regardless of age of fitness level. Please wear comfortable clothing. Weitz is a trained gestalt therapist with a focus on body awareness. Blood Pressure Screening - Long Beach Medical Center's Gerri Moore will provide free blood pressure testing. Sept. 14 and Oct. 12 at 12-2 p.m.


High Hill Beach Lecture - Sponsored by the Long Beach Island Landmark Association. Around 1900, some enterprising vacationers established a small community at High Hill, erecting summer cottages and venturing across South Bay by ferry from Bellmore. A small hotel was constructed and by 1920, the community contained nearly 100 houses. Besides the seasonal commuters and life-saving station, the barrier island was home only to wildlife and heavy flora. Josh Soren, Jones Beach historian will present vintage postcards, photos and maps and a slide presentation of life in the turn-of-the-century resort community. Sept. 16 at 2 p.m.


Musical Revue - Here's a fresh musical about the King of Musicals, Cole Porter. This entertaining and fast-paced musical revue, which contains informative facts about Porter's life and career, features such classics as "Night and Day," "Love for Sate," "I Get a Kick Out of You," and "I love Paris." September 17 at 2 p.m.


Book Discussion - 'Saving Fish From Drowning', by Amy Tan. In this story about a tour gone wrong, Bibi Chen plans to lead a trip for 12 friends. Bibi dies but the group decides to go after all. The DaVinci Code Disscussion - By popular demand, Father Donald Beckman of St. Ignatius Martyr R.C. Church and Father Robert Splittgerber of St. John's Lutheran Church by the Sea, will continue to answer many of the issues brought up in the movie and book, The DaVinci Code. Refreshments will be served at 7 p.m. September 20 at 7:30 p.m.


Slide Show - Join Mickey Maxwell Cohen, award-winning naturalist and marine educator as he takes us on a slide-illustrated walk along the beaches of Long Island. He'll tell us, among other things, about a defenseless sea-creature that steals deadly weapons from other organisms which it can then use for its own protection, about a lowly marine invertebrate that might hold in its genes secrets of the electronics industry in the future, and about an evolutionary ancestor of all backboned animals that still resides, out of sight, in our coastal waters. Lecture on Love - The mysterious phenomena of love wells up powerful creative inspiration throughout the ages. Paul Jeffries will present a provocative exploration of themes such as the connection between love and sex, eternal love, beauty, the chemistry of attraction and the inventive ways in which lovers communicate their passion, as depicted in paintings, sculpture, stories and verse. Sculptor and computer artist Paul Jeffries graduated from the Accademia de Belle Arti de Roma and has exhibited internationally. Sept. 27 at 1:30 p.m.


Voting in Nassau County - Sponsored by the Long Beach League of Women Voters, this program will focus on the changes in voting methods under the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) and election law poll regulations. Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m.


Avanti Society - Long Beach City Manager Edwin Eaton will discuss his future plans for the City-By-The-Sea. He will also take your questions. Oct. 5 at 7:30 p.m.

Cast Calls for St. Ignatius - St. Ignatius Choral Society, Long Beach, welcomes voices in all sections as it continues rehearsals on works by Mozart and Berlioz. The Friday night rehearsals take place on the second floor of the Long Beach Catholic School, on West Broadway between Grand Boulevard and New York Avenue. LBMC's Women's Empowerment Group can help victims take back control of their lives. Facilitated by a certified social worker, the group discussions include a variety of topics such as parenting skills, relationship issues and domestic violence. The group is bilingual. Nightwatch The Nightwatch Hotline in Long Beach offers crisis counseling and referral to callers from all over the area, free of charge. Hotline hours are Sunday-Thursday from 6-11 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Call 889-2332.


Diabetes Club meets the third Monday each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Goldstein Auditorium at LBMC. Topics include nutritional management, medications, eye and foot care, exercise and more.

Caring for someone with dementia? You are not alone. The JASA AZORS/HELP Social Adult Day program provides stimulating activities for adults over 60 who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's or other types of dementia. Sessions are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at locations in Long Beach and Oceanside. For more info, call 432-0570.


Bereavement Support On Thursdays from 2:30 to 3:30 P.M. in Conference Room C at Long Beach Medical Center. The Medical Center's Counseling Center will offer a weekly bereavement support group for individuals dealing with the death of a family member or loved one. The Long Beach Animal Shelter, at 770 Park Pl., welcomes volunteers for socializing with abandoned pets. Dog-walkers are welcome.
