Let's talk about it. Jewish literature series about "Demons, Golems and Dybbuks - Monsters of the Jewish Imagination." The first book of study is "Satan in Goray," by Isaac Bashevis Singer with a discussion on Sept. 15. Rabbi Robert Judd of the So. Baldwin Jewish Center is discussion leader. Mohonk Mountain trip. Visit the turreted, 7-story Victorian castle on Sept. 29. $89 fee includes transportation, buffet lunch, garden walk and tour of historical stone house on Huguenot Street. Register at the adult reference desk. Bus leaves at 8:30 a.m. from the employee parking lot, 7:30 p.m. return.

Digital photography workshops. A continuing series of beginner-level workshops on digital photography: Photo touch-up technique on Tuesday, Sept. 20, from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Basic touch-up techniques. Special photo projects on Tuesday, Sept. 27, from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Make cards, calendars, tee shirts and other creative projects. Bring your own photos - flash memory cards on Tuesday, Oct. 18, from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Digital techniques to improve photo quality. Memories and magic - photo preservation and restoration on Tuesday, Nov. 15 from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Saving and storing precious old photos using your scanner.

Chess workshop. The Young Adult Department of the library will host a chess workshop for children in grades five through eight on Friday, Oct. 14, from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. Members of the Long Island chess Nuts will teach youngsters the rules of the game. Registration begins Saturday, Sept. 10 at the Young Adult Reference Desk. A non-refundable materials fee of $1 is due at registration. Class size is limited to 20 students, so register early. Stories and songs of Latin America. Celebrate Hispanice Heritage Month on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 2:30 p.m. Enjoy Latin American stories, music, songs, instruments, dance and language in an interactive program featuring Felix Pitre. For children in grades K through 6. Registration begins Sept. 17.

Children's department will be celebrating the grand opening of the new and improved library on Sunday, Sept. 25 with many activities for the whole family. From 1:15 p.m. until 2 p.m., sing along with Janice Buckner and her puppet friends. Amore will share his magic and balloon sculptures from 3 p.m. unti 4 p.m. Face painting, story flicks and refreshments will also be available during the afternoon.

After school homework center will open on Sept. 26. A certified teacher will be available, Monday through Thursday, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. to help children in grades 2 through 6 with homework. The center is open only when school is in session.

Story Times for children ages three through kindergarten on Saturdays at 10 a.m. from Oct. 1 until Nov. 5. For three- four- year old, meetings will be held on Tuesdays beginning Oct. 11 and ending Dec. 20. Registration is required. Call Wendy Kappelmier for details.

Special events



Volunteers needed. Baldwin Homemakers, a non-profit group that raises money to help the needy, is holding a food drive for the St. Anthony Food Pantry. Homemakers is also raising money for scholarships and other worthwhile charities. Membership is open to volunteers in all communities. Members help neighbors in need, learn crafts and make new friends. Their next meeting will be held on Oct. 5 at Baldwin middle school. Call 608-2920.

Communities for a Cure is holding a 5K run/walk on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 9 a.m. to benefit South Nassau Communities Hospital's Breast/GYN Health and Comprehensive Care Center. The event, held at the hospital campus in Oceanside, also features a free health fair. Pre-registration, postmark deadline Sept. 15, is $15, later registration is $20. Call 377-5360.

"Journalism - Beyond the Classroom" will be hosted by Nassau Community College and the Press Club of Long Island. High school juniors and seniors learn about journalism from people currently in the field. Some Like it Hot. From center orchestra seats, enjoy this Billy Wilder classic at the Gateway Playhouse in Bellport on Wednesday, Sep. 21. This musical romps across the stage to the music and lyrics of Jule Styne and Bob Merrill and will leave you laughing in the aisles. $91 fee includes dinner at the elegant Bellport Country Club. The Vatican and the Holocaust. 500 years of controversy is the focus of a lecture by Stanislao G. Pugliese, author and associate professor of Modern European History and Italian Studies at Hofstra University, on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 2 p.m. You'll learn how the ghetto originated in Italy, what role the Jews played in the unification of Italy and how that role influenced their position vis-à-vis the church. $6 fee.

Religious Events



All Saints' Episcopal Church has a new schedule of services for fall. Holy Eucharist will be held on Sundays at 8 a.m., with Sunday school at 9:45 and Sung Eucharist at 10:00. There will also be Holy Eucharist on Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m.

The St. Peter's Evangical Lutheran Church, 2332 Grand Ave., holds Holy Eucharist on Sunday mornings at 9 a.m. during July and August. Weekday services will be held at noon. For more information, call 223-1951.

Library days. Thirty books are delivered monthly and dispersed every Monday and Friday of the month at 10 a.m. for those seniors in the community who have a hard time getting to and from the library.

Free classes resume mid-September.

Arts and crafts. Tuesdays, from 10 a.m. until noon.

Group birthday/anniversary party, on the third wednesday of every month at 1 p.m.

Showtime. Enjoy a member-produced show every Thursday at 1 p.m.
