Village concert
On July 23, Black Velvet will be playing Irish music from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at the Village Green, on Maple Avenue. The show is free. In case of rain, it will be held at the Rec Center.

Free Health Screening at St. Agnes Cathedral
Mercy Medical Center is hosting a special event on July 25 at St. Agnes Cathedral from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. that includes free screenings for blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol and body mass index with staff from Mercy, Good Samaritan Hospital Center, St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center, St. Charles Hospital, St. Francis Hospital The Heart Center, and Catholic Home Care. Wounded Warrior Project fundraiser
The Oceanside Knights of Columbus is hosting a gala fundraiser and parade for the Wounded Warrior Project at the Council Building on Kenneth Place and Atlantic Avenue on Aug. 9 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. $25 per person includes food and drink. Contact John Gallo at (516) 764-2516 for more information.
Phillips House summer schedule
The gardens at the Phillips House Museum, 28 Hempstead Ave., are open seven days a week until dusk. The Phillips House is furnished in period pieces from the 19th and 20th centuries. Shake A Speare 7-8 p.m. The bard is calling fifth graders and older to join in this hands-on workshop exploring the works and world of William Shakespeare. Summer Reading Club participants should register at the Adult Reference Desk.

Yoga with Joe 1 p.m. Lyengar yoga instructor Joe Cilmi will be on hand to lead students through this popular exercise class. Wear comfortable clothing and bring a soft towel or yoga mat. Participants must be registered and pay a non-refundable $10 participation fee (six classes) at the Adult Reference Desk. You must be registered to attend classes.

Simply Stronger Exercise 9:15 a.m.
Join certified fitness instructor Marilyn Bunger for this popular class. You must be registered to attend. There is a $10 per six-week session fee payable at registration.

2009-10 Nursery School
Designed to meet the needs of the community, the Rec center is again offering its nursery school programs that have operated continuously for 47 years. Prospective students may visit with their parents. Call the Rec. Dept. office at (516) 678-9339 to make arrangements.
Eligibility: Pre K- for those entering kindergarten in Sept. 2010. Pre-Pre K for those entering kindergarten in Sept. 2011. Class offerings: PreK I classes 9-11:20 a.m. (5 days per week) ; PreK II classes 12:15-2:45 pm. (3 days per week); Pre-Pre K I classes 9-11:30 a.m. (4 days per week): Pre-Pre K II classes 12:15 p.m.-2:45 p.m. (2 days per week). Registration is now being accepted for residents and non-residents. Openings are limited.
