According to police, David Chisholm, 24, of Freeport, started his string of burglaries at a home on Rockaway Avenue in Oceanside at about 9 a.m., breaking through a back window only to be interrupted when the homeowner showed up a short time later, police said. Chisholm scrambled through the same window he entered without any loot.
Then, at about 9:50 a.m., Chisholm entered a basement window of a home on Chelsea Lane in Rockville Centre. He removed jewelry, a cell phone and cash, police said.
Chisholm then attempted to break into a home on Windsor Avenue in Rockville Centre, but a neighbor spotted him in the act and called police. Aided by a Nassau County helicopter, Rockville Centre police chased Chisholm on foot, eventually capturing and arresting him. They recovered the jewelry, cell phone and cash taken from the Chelsea Lane home, police said.
Rockville Centre police said that Chisholm was on foot throughout his spree, at one point evading police and the helicopter by hiding under a home¼s covered patio. „Police officers confronted him after some neighbors telephoned us to tell us where he was and what he was doing as we were zeroing in on the area,¾ said Lt. David Marcel. „The neighbors did the right thing so that we were able to apprehend him.¾
Chisholm was charged with two counts of second-degree burglary and one count of second-degree attempted burglary. Police also charged him with third-degree criminal mischief for kicking and damaging a police door.
