On Feb. 11, 13 juniors and seniors from Oceanside High School left for a field trip to Costa Rica, but right from the start they learned that the best laid plans —sometimes mean missing your connecting flight.
Once there, they experienced many types of rain forests, went kayaking, and white water rafting on lakes and rivers. The students hiked then rode zip lines through the treetops, coming face to face with several species of monkeys, sloths and lots of brilliantly plumaged birds. They encountered coatimundi; saw poisonous frogs, snakes and even crocodiles, snorkeled with beautifully colored fish, sea snakes, rays and eels. Their tour guide took them to an active volcano, where they had the opportunity to bathe in natural hot springs. Costa Rica is known for its bio diversity, and the travelers were able to see and experience a wide range of flora and fauna including an orchid in bloom, that only flowers twice a year
On the seventh day out, they were hiking, it was 92 degrees, when they came upon a man in heat distress. Making their own stretcher they were able to round robin him down a path, crossing a narrow foot bridge, to the edge of the forest, where an ambulance was waiting.
They returned home on Feb.19, with souvenirs, suntans, and memories of the trip of a lifetime.
