Overcoming odds, Rockville Centre athlete needs your vote

Rockville Centre resident Thomas Morr, 22, was named a finalist for the Lowes’s Senior Class Award 2012, overcoming both illness and injury to become one of the top players in the country.

The award is presented to NCAA division I student-athletes based on academics, character, community work and competition.

According to Morr’s neighbor, Brian Haggerty, the award is given to one lacrosse player nationally and the voting consists of a combination of the public, the coaches and the media.

While a freshman at Chaminade High School, more was diagnosed with viral encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain.

“He was in a coma for about a month,” Haggerty said. “He basically had to relearn how to walk and talk and play lacrosse.”

Morr was able to return to lacrosse and, after graduating high school, began playing for the Siena College Saints.

During the summer prior to Morr’s junior year, he blew out his ACL and doctors told him he would not be ready to begin the lacrosse season.

Morr was cleared for the team’s first practice in January 2011 and played in every game.

“He really worked his way back to where he is today,” Haggerty said. “He’s made a comeback to be one of the best goalies in the country.”
