The Garrity family, Peter, Delia and Trish, along with the Silon family, Diana and Corryn, are returning to Masese, Uganda this month to continue their humanitarian work in the village and at the HELP Uganda Primary School. Thanks to the generosity of many community members, they are bringing 18 50-pound boxes filled with school supplies, medical supplies, clothing and pen pal letters.
Students at Wilson and Hewitt elementary schools donated their remaining school supplies at the end of the school year. The Student Council at Wilson and the first graders at Hewitt collected and organized a “mountain” of supplies. The students in Masese will now use school supplies that would have filled dumpsters. St. Agnes Brownie Troop 837 donated medical supplies and Molloy College Giving Tree donated items in all categories.
Students from Covert, Hewitt and Watson schools as well as St. Agnes Brownie Troop 837 wrote pen pal letters to the Ugandan students. The Garritys and Silons will bring back return letters in their suitcases and distribute these in September.
Returning suitcases will also be filled with “Mothers of Masese” jewelry and purses that will be available at charity sales in the community. Both Atlantic Beach Club and Ocean Beach Club will be including the beaded items at events on Aug. 9. Local residents have also offered to host jewelry parties in their homes.
The families are overwhelmed by the generosity of the community — individual, family and group donations. More information on the project can be found at
