They came from all over Long Island May 8 to gather in Oceanside in mourning and respect for New York City Police Officer Brian Moore, who died after being shot while on duty.
He was only 25, had just five years on the city police force, and came from a family of police officers, but on May 2, a promising career was cut short when Moore was shot in the face. He died two days later.
Moore and his partner, Erik Jansen, 30, were in plain clothes in an unmarked car in Queens when they tried to question a man saw seen adjusting his waistband. The man, alleged to be Demetrius Blackwell, who was said to be staying with friends in the Queens Village area, turned and fired, hitting Moore.
Moore took the exam to join the police force at age 17, following in the footsteps of his father, Raymond, as well as uncles and cousins. He still lived with his family in Massapequa. He had made over 150 arrests and won several commendations, and was posthumously promoted to detective last Friday.
