When Pergament owners announced earlier this year they would close down operations, many people didn't know what would happen to the leases they held throughout Long Island.
Last weekend, however, Pergament officials put the stores' leases up for bid, including that of the Bellmore location along Merrick Road. Alco Funding Corp. put in a $250,000 credit bid for the Bellmore location's lease. That bid is pending.
Pergament's decision to sell its leases is the latest step in Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings for the company.
Three of Pergament's landlords had come together to file a Chapter 11 petition, which Pergament consented to in late February. Since then, the stores have had "Going Out of Business" signs posted and have sold off most of their merchandise.
Pergament stores, including Bellmore's, could be shut down by as early as April.
