A lifelong Lynbrook resident, Hoesel is chairwoman of the Beautification and Winter Celebration committees, Lynbrook Block Watch co-captain, a member of the Lynbrook 9/11 Memorial Committee who designed and sketched the proposed 9/11 Memorial Garden, a member of the Lynbrook Architectural Review Board and a member of the Lynbrook Class of 1971 Reunion Committee. She served on the Marian Street Elementary School 75th Anniversary Committee as well.
"This is one fantastic, dynamic woman," said Mayor Eugene Scarpato.
The 52-year-old dynamo is the single mother of a daughter, Amanda, 22, and is self-employed. In between her countless hours of volunteering, she has run a small day care business out of her home for the past 15 years. During Amanda's youth, Hoesel was a Girl Scout leader, a board member of the PTA and taught religious instruction.
"She is inspirational," said Amanda. "She does so much for the community, and she doesn't do it for the recognition. She just has a great heart."
According to Amanda, Hoesel runs at a pace most people couldn't keep up with. "My mom is up every day at 5:30 a.m., takes care of the children until 4 p.m., cooks dinner and then attends meetings two or three times a week," said Amanda. "When she does something, she does it to the extreme. She gives 110 percent in everything she does."
The Beautification Committee has made great strides since Hoesel joined it and then became chairwoman four years ago. Her input is evident in the flowering blossoms that line Atlantic Avenue and the buds and shrubs that grace the grounds of the Lynbrook Public Library. Hoesel's magic touch is evident in every smiling face at the Winter Celebration events, and her artistic ability and creativity will be appreciated by the entire village when the 9/11 Memorial Garden is completed.
"She truly puts her heart into everything she does," Amanda said proudly. "My mother will be a little embarrassed by being honored as Person of the Year, but she will be honored."
