New passport office opens in Lynbrook

“Ladies and gentlemen, you know when you see space, you have to put something there!” Former Postmaster Pete Daniels said at the grand opening of the Lynbrook passport office on Oct. 21.

The celebration kicked off at 10 a.m. with the cutting of the ribbon and a few light refreshments for employees and families who were coming in to get their passports. And after months of discussion and rebuilding, officials at the Lynbrook Post Office did in fact fill that space. Individuals can now go through the passport application process in the new office at 100 Broadway in Lynbrook. Just a half-mile from the Lynbrook train station and various bus stops, the office is accessible to almost anyone wanting to process a passport.

“I think this is positive,” Carol Koch, officer in charge of the Lynbrook Post Office. “It’s something that is local and something that is part of the community. You can share it with your friends and family, and just call to make an appointment.” Koch added that there is also a new ramp in place of the wheelchair lift for people with disabilities to gain access to the facility.

“The office will be a great benefit to the community because getting a passport can be very time consuming and there is a lot of paperwork involved,” said Communications Specialist for the Northeast area postal service Christine Dugas. “This gives people an opportunity to come out on Saturday and Sunday, and in the evening hours.”

In order for a child under the age of 16 to obtain a passport, both parents must be present. The passport office will have family friendly hours so parents can take their children after work. The office will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays; from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursdays; and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the weekends. It is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

“We are a centralized location,” said Shirley Barr, supervisor of customer service at the Lynbrook post office. “We will be able to satisfy a lot of customer’s in having their passports filled, especially on Saturdays and Sundays.”
