The Rockville Centre Basketball League’s season got under way Saturday morning in a tip off game featuring a match between 4th and 5th grade boys. One of the teams is sponsored by Game7 Sports — a sports training company. The other team is sponsored by the Alex Benjamin Norris Memorial Fund, dedicated to the memory of a young man who died in 1994 of Fanconi anemia. The fund has always been a strong supporter of the league and organizers say they are always honored to play in support of his memory.
The Rockville Centre Basketball League was formed in the mid-1950’s and promotes good sportsmanship, learning basketball and, most importantly, having fun. All participants play an equal amount of time each game — there are no bench warmers. Enrollment this year is over 1,100 players, ranging from 3rd graders to 12 graders. Among the players are over 350 girls (this division was formed in 1980). All games (likely over 500 in total this year) are played in local schools and at the Rec Center. The season runs from October through March.
There are currently 115 teams in the league this year but officials are considering adding more teams because there is a waiting list.
