According to Det. Lt. Kevin Smith of the Nassau County Police, police believe that Kenneth Stokes had most likely fallen asleep while smoking a cigarette while in the alleyway at 491 Hempstead Turnpike in Elmont.
Stokes was rushed to the Nassau University Medical Center Burn Unit.
Smith said the cigarette may have lit his clothing ablaze while Stokes was falling asleep. People at the scene had put the fire out while someone called 911. The Nassau County Fire Marshal's office does not, at this time, believe the fire to be suspicious.
Police were still investigating and have yet to determine if any type of accelerant played a part in the tragedy.
