Police ID man killed after boat capsizes near Point Lookout

Search under way for missing Farmingdale man

Nassau County Police Sunday identified the boater killed off Point Lookout Saturday as a 54-year-old Farmingdale man, the owner of the vessel that capsized, throwing him and three others overboard in rough waters.

Police said a search is still underway for a 65-year-old man, one of those tossed overboard.

The dead man was identified as John Costa, who was transferred by the U.S. Coast Guard to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He was removed from the water by the New York City Police aviation unit.

Police said a search is still underway for Joseph Sparacio, also of Farmingdale. He was identified as white, 5'10' inches tall and weighing about 180 pounds. Police said he was wearing a dark-colored sweatshirt, white fishing boots and possibly an orange life jacket, when he disappeared.

Nassau Police said two others on the boat, identified only as 24 and 26 years old, were rescued by a man traveling with his family on a 68-foot vessel. The two were transported to a hospital and treated for hypothermia and non-life threatening injuries, police said.

The vessel the four were aboard overturned in rough waters at about 11:52 am Saturday in Jones Beach Inlet, off Point Lookout.

The boat was recovered and removed from the scene by Nassau County Marine Bureau; the United States Coast Guard, Nassau County Police Department, New York City Police Department's aviation bureau, and fire departments from Long Beach, Point Lookout-Lido, Inwood, Lawrence-Cedarhurst, Wantagh, Freeport, Oceanside and Island Park all assisted in the rescue, police said.

Detectives are asking anyone with information to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS or to call 911. All callers will remain anonymous.
