Suffolk County police are searching for a missing Long Beach man after his sailboat was found floating aimlessly in Lloyd Harbor.

Suffolk police said they received a call around 7:56 p.m. on Thursday informing them that an unmanned boat was adrift in the harbor. Traces of blood were found in the boat, and police said that the case is being investigated as a suicide.

"The preliminary investigation appears to be that it was a suicide," a Suffolk County police spokesperson said.

The Long Beach resident and boat owner, who police did not identify, was known as a loyal customer at Coneys Marine, where he took his boat out often with his family, according to media interviews with owner Jim Coneys. Coneys told reporters that the man lost his wife a year earlier, and had told a marina employee earlier in the day that he had become depressed.

Suffolk police said they are continuing their search.
