Policy-making decisions adopted at library New equipment, drop boxes and updated security

Baldwin librarian-in-charge Catherine Overton said the benefits of an increased circulation outweigh the possible pitfalls of patrons not returning pamphlets on time.
The library board also approved purchases of $10,240 and $8,319.31 for an updated security system and new AV equipment and book drop bins, respectively.
The new drop bins will be placed in the rear of the library and will replace the underutilized and outdated boxes scattered about the Baldwin area.
Kevin Kamen, president of the board, said the good weather as of late has allowed construction to get ahead of schedule.
"We've been fortunate to have very nice weather," he said. "They've been able to complete a lot of work that we really didn't think they'd be able to do so fast." Of course, that was said prior to last weekend's unprecedented snowstorm.
Kamen said that while he wants the library to open as soon as possible, giving a timetable at this time would be premature.
"We are moving as fast as we possibly can to make this library renovation as quick and as smooth and possible," Kamen said.
The major reason for not opening portions of the library that have already been completed is because of safety, according to Kamen. He said he doesn't want to subject patrons or staff members to construction areas until they are 100 percent safe.
During the public comment section of the meeting, a patron commended the staff of the library, saying they have been "unbelievable" in providing services during the construction period.
Kamen agreed, saying the staff accentuates the positive aspects of the library.
The speaker also chided the board for not being forthcoming with information regarding the renovation project. He suggested a bulletin board giving weekly updates. Two staff members lauded the idea, saying they had been inundated with questions about the renovations and were unable to provide answers.
Kamen said the board will take this suggestion under consideration.
