Post-prom party plans progressing

In recent weeks, Wellness Council representatives spoke before the senior classes at each of the Central District's three high schools, Calhoun, Kennedy and Mepham.
The idea behind the post-prom party is to give seniors a safe venue where they can continue to celebrate after the prom. The Wellness Council has planned the Central District's first-ever post-prom party for nearly four years. A number of South Shore school districts offer such parties, including, most notably, Long Beach, Oceanside and Hewlett-Woodmere.
At each of the recent Central District assemblies, students and faculty members helped drum up support for the post-prom parties, which will be held from 1 to 4 a.m. on June 27 at three Sportime locations.
Calhoun's post-prom party will be held at the Syosset Sportime, Kennedy's at the Bethpage complex and Mepham's at the Lynbrook location.
The event is made possible in large part by a $15,000 state grant secured by state Sen. Charles Fuschillo Jr., a Republican from Merrick. The Long Island Power Authority, the Dime Savings Bank of Williamsburgh, Roslyn Savings and Ridgewood Savings have all pledged their support for the party as well.
The post-prom event will be free to all seniors and their dates. They will be able to continue dancing after the prom, they can play any number of sports or they can simply hang out and talk with friends one last time before heading off to college, the military or the workaday world. Seniors who choose not to attend the prom may take part in the post-prom party.
The Wellness Council is currently seeking raffle prizes that would be appropriate for high school seniors headed off to college. The prizes will be given away at the party. For more information, to sponsor the event or to make a donation, call Fran Licausi, the Wellness Council executive director, at (516) 992-1073.
