LIPA reported that more than 1,280 customers in Long Beach, Lido Beach and Point Lookout were without power on the evening of Thursday, Jan. 7. The cause was attributed to a transformer on a utility pole that malfunctioned, Long Beach Fire Chief Scott Kemins said.
“They had it back on within an hour,” Kemins said.
The transformer blew out on a pole at East Chester and Vinton Streets, Kemins said. Power was out mainly along the eastern part of the barrier island starting at 8:10 p.m., Kemins said. It was restored by 9 p.m.
The outage came on the heels of a power outage that affected residents during the recent blizzard that buried Long Beach in nearly two feet of snow. On Dec. 27, more than 1,800 people were without power in Long Beach and 757 in Lido Beach.
Kemins said that firefighters responded to one emergency call during the latest outage, after an alarm at Long Beach Medical Center went off. Kemins said it was triggered because of the power outage and there were no injuries.
“We had one automatic fire alarm at the hospital due to the power failure,” he said.
