Pregnancy & infant loss program for parents

The program, which will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., will bring together physicians, health care professionals, spiritual leaders and parents wishing to learn more about coping with pregnancy and infant loss, and options for the future.The event will feature a feature a panel of experts who will discuss topics that include: Parental Diagnosis and Decision Making in the Second and Third Trimesters, Infertility and Pregnancy Loss; Pregnancy After Loss; Grief and Moving Forward; The NIC Experience; High Risk Pregnancy and Management of Multiples (twins, triplets, etc.); a Men Coping With Loss.The keynote address will given by Yamin Levy, author of Confronting the Loss of a Baby. Following the discussions and workshops, a non-denominational candle lighting and memorial service will be held in the hospital's Babies Memorial Garden. The event is sponsored by the hospital's Department of Obstetrics/Gynecology and the Pregnancy and Infant Loss Program. Home Depot co-founder to be honored



Queens Centers for Progress, formerly United Cerebral Palsy of Queens, will honor Ken Langone, co-founder of The Home Depot and chairman and chief executive officer of Invemed Associates, at its sixth annual Golf & Tennis Outing on Thursday, Sept. 26. The event takes place at the North Hills Country Club in Manhasset, New York, with two Shotgun Starts at 7:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.Langone serves on numerous boards including General Electric, New York Stock Exchange, Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation, New York Philharmonic, Ronald McDonald House of New York and the Robin Hood Foundation. He is also on the board of overseers of the Stern School and the board of trustees of New York University as well as chairman of the New York University Medical School.Queens Centers for Progress provides services for children and adults in Queens County who have Cerebral Palsy and other development disabilities. 9/11 blood drive



To mark the one-year anniversary of the World Trade Center tragedy, South Nassau Communities Hospital will hold a commemorative 9/11 blood drive on Saturday, Sept. 14, in the hospital's Albert Conference Room, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.This year, the blood shortage is especially critical since the federal government banned imported European blood in May. The ban is intended to reduce the possibility of the human form of mad cow disease could be spread through the blood. Some 25 percent of New York's blood supply is from Europe and blood center officials warn that new restrictions will further aggravate the shortage.Eligible donors must be at least 17-years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and have not donated blood within the last 56 days. New federal guidelines also exclude people who have spent three or more months in the United Kingdom, where mad cow disease first appeared, or those who have lived five-years or more in Europe.To pre-register or for more information, call 1-877-South-Nassau.


Asthma 101



Asthma sufferers can take control of their asthma with "Asthma 101," an Adult Asthma Education Course offered by Winthrop-University Hospital's Pulmonary Rehabilitation Division beginning September 11. Classes will be conducted by registered nurses and respiratory therapist with years of clinical experience in asthma management. Meetings will be held on Wednesday evenings: September 11, 18 and 25, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at 222 Station Plaza North in Mineola, Suite 400.During the three-week program, each participant will receive an asthma workbook, a peak flow meter and individualized instruction on how to use inhaled medication. There will also be an opportunity to meet and share feelings with other people who have asthma.The sessions cost a total of $25. Pre-registration is required. Country dancing at Franklin



The Auxiliary of Franklin Hospital Medical Center is sponsoring a "Country Dance" at the hospital on Saturday, Sept. 28.
