Five Towns Karate was established in 1968 and Dan Segarra took it over 20 years ago.
Two types of instruction are offered at the studio. "We have a traditional martial arts program," Segarra said, explaining that this "is more of a lifestyle, where dedication and time is required."
The traditional martial arts program emphasizes developing confidence, respect, courtesy and personal development as well as self-defense.
The other type of instruction offered is CDT.
"CDT stands for Compliance, Direction, Takedown," Segarra said ominously. "It's a non-deadly-force system."
CDT focuses on three aspects of defense: personal safety, subject safety and full circle liability. Full circle liability means that a person can defend himself/herself legally without causing damage to the other person.
"We can either apply a compliance, holding them until police arrive or others evacuate to safety; we can escort them away to a safer area, or we can momentarily stun them so we can leave without them pursuing us," Segarra said.
"We teach you to defend yourself within the legality of the law," he continued.
The CDT non-deadly-force personal protection system is for anyone who wants to quickly learn a simple means of self-defense that is legal and liability conscious.
CDT is taught to everyday people from all walks of life. "It is taught in two-day courses," Segarra said. He teaches how to defend oneself empty-handedly, how to disarm someone who has a weapon, and family protection.
Each course can be customized to you and your lifestyle. Whether you are a teacher, business person, homemaker, doctor, police officer or a college student, Five Towns Karate can teach you how to protect yourself and your family with simple skills you can learn in days, not years.
CDT techniques can be applied while standing, sitting or lying down; even in your car. Most courses are two days (12 hours).
Five Towns Karate is open 3-9 p.m. Monday to Friday and 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday.
