Long Beach Medical Center's Project Liberty provided a free and confidential Drop-In Center on Sept. 11 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Long Beach Public Library for those whose lives have been affected by the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11. Professionals were on-hand to help those who came for assistance, validate their feelings, teach them methods of coping and provide referrals. No appointment was necessary and complimentary refreshments were served.
Dr. Louis G. Cornacchia
New appointment
Mercy Medical Center has recently appointed Dr. Louis G. Cornacchia as section chief of neurosurgery. Dr. Cornacchia is the co-director of the Gamma Knife Center of Long Island and the founder and current physician manager for New York Neurosurgery and Neuroscience Associates. He is actively involved and devoted to advancements in medical technology and is excited about Mercy's recent arrival of the Leksell Gamma Knife, according to Mercy Medical Center. "The Gamma Knife Center of Long Island is capable of offering a highly sophisticated procedure to our patients, placing Mercy at the leading edge of radiosurgery on Long Island as well as the region," Dr. Cornacchia said.Mercy said the Gamma Knife will be able to treat previously untreatable, deep-seated brain tumors, vein and artery malformations, and functional disorders, non-invasively and with extraordinary precision.Prior to joining Mercy, Dr. Cornacchia was the chief of neurosurgery at Island Medical Center. From 1995-1996 he was chief resident, division of neurosurgery, University of California at San Diego (UCSD) Medical Center, where he also received his training, which included a research fellow, residency, as well as an internship in general surgery.
Are hormones related to cancer?
David Smotkin, M.D. of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology from Long Island Jewish Medical Center, will address the relationship between hormones and cancer. The lecture will be held in the Teacher Center, room 201 A, B, C, at Long Island Jewish Medical Center Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 7:30 p.m. For early birds, coffee and cake will be served before the lecture at 7 p.m.
Free health screenings
Long Beach Medical Center, in collaboration with Project Challenge, will provide free diabetes, cholesterol and blood pressure screenings from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Sunday, Sept. 29 at St. Mary of the Isle Roman Catholic Church, 315 East Walnut St. in Long Beach. Diabetes education, support
The Diabetes Club will meet on Monday, Sept. 23, at 7:30 p.m. in the Goldstein Auditorium at Long Beach Medical Center to provide support to diabetics. Thyroid and related endocrine diseases
Sheldon Bleicher, M.D., of the Division of Internal Medicine Department of Medicine at North Shore University Hospital at Plainview, will be lecturing on thyroid and related endocrine diseases in the lecture hall of North Shore University Hospital at Plainview, Thursday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. Coffee and cake will precede the lecture at 6:30 p.m.
