Parents and residents are all invited to any of the three, outdoor Pre-Prom celebrations at Valley Stream Central, North and South high schools on Friday, June 3, from 5-7 p.m., when seniors emerge from their limousines in their glittery prom wear and walk the red carpet while videotape and cameras record the evening for posterity. Hors d'oeuvres and punch are served to all guests, and music will add to the festivities. In case of rain, the Pre-Proms will be held in the school gyms.
'Viva' Central H.S.
Now in its 11th year, Central High School's Pre-Prom on June 3 from 5-7 p.m. takes place on the Fletcher Avenue promenade in front of the school, preceding the 7 p.m. prom at Terrace on the Park. The prom theme is "Viva Las Vegas," featuring picturesque photo backdrops carrying out the theme.
Heading the Pre-Prom planning are Senior Class advisors Jennifer Buonagurio and Corey Seeley. Chairing the decorations committee is parent Sandy Procida. Parents are generously providing the appetizers, which will be served by students in the Culinary Arts Program taught by Chef Peter Augello.
North's true colors
Using a green-and-white color scheme in the school colors, North High School's fifth annual Pre-Prom celebration on June 3 from 5-7 p.m. will be held in the faculty parking lot preceding the prom at the Milleridge Inn in Jericho.
"A highlight of this eventful night," said PTSA parent coordinator Pam Young, "is when the entire class gathers for a group photo around the Class of 2005 sign provided by North parent Joe Englese."
Many door prizes, including cash prizes and DVD's will go to the lucky seniors who attend the Pre-Prom, whether or not they attend the prom. Money for the prizes is raised by the class councils, as well as by donations from parents and staff. Also adding to the festivities are a deejay, photo backdrops, and hors d'oeuvres and other refreshments.
Planning the Pre-Prom is a joint venture of the North PTSA, under co-presidents Cindy Mevorach and Jean Giuliante, and the North Spartan Club under co-presidents Paul Kay and Richard Schacca. Committee heads include Judy DeFelice, donations; Judy Watt, refreshments; Patty Mack, decorations; Chris Hempel and Paula Pastore, publicity; and Peter Mayo, security. Students in the seventh to 11th grades help with set-up, decorating, serving and cleaning up afterwards.
"Not only does this party provide for a substance-free environment, but it also gives the entire community the opportunity to be part of a joyous celebration," said Young.
South goes Hollywood
Also to be held on Friday, June 3, from 5-7 p.m. is South High School's 14th annual Pre-Prom on the school's Gladys Street Circle before the prom at Crest Hollow Country Club.
"Hollywood" is the theme of this year's Class of 2005 celebration, carried out with a red, gold and black color scheme; table centerpieces of reels of film; large gold stars and Oscars on poles surrounding the Gladys Street island; large wooden film reels and wooden cameras built by students in Christopher Viggiano's Construction & Remodeling program at South; and a photo backdrop of the Hollywood hills and sign, painted by students in South teacher Roseann Valletti's Art Club.
Seniors who attend the Pre-Prom have a chance at winning one of many door prizes, including the grand prize of $500.
Coordinating the Pre-Prom is South Student Activities Director Nell Landman, assisted by teacher Madeline Silverman. Committees of parents and teachers have been hard at work gathering donations for decorations, refreshments and door prizes. Parent committee heads are Sherry Galvin and Marianne Zawislak, decorations; Barbara Cestaro, donations; and Carol Cannonito and Ellen Hillman, refreshments. Senior Class advisors are Lori Tintella and Jeanette Azzaretto. Scores of 7th-11th graders in Class Councils and SADD will help decorate and serve.
