Putting a new spin on some old classics

The air was electric with the excitement of creativity and competition as Lynbrook High School students competed in their annual Class Night Skits, entertaining family and fellow classmates with their energy, originality and humor.

In a tradition spanning more than eight decades, the event pits freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors against one another in a friendly rivalry in which each class demonstrates its own brand of one-upmanship in showmanship.

The theme of this year’s competition was “Children’s Stories,” featuring a modern take on four classic tales. The freshmen used Goldilocks and the Three Bears as a foundation to show that love is blind. In the sophomore skit, after stressing about their upcoming nuptials, Cinderella and Prince Charming realized that they didn’t need a fancy wedding to live happily every after. The juniors revisited all their favorite Dr. Seuss stories, with the Lorax, Sam-I-Am and the Cat in the Hat all joining forces to help the Grinch grow his small, miserable heart.

The seniors chose a theme close to their own hearts, as Winnie the Pooh and friends put their heads together to try to raise enough money to send Christopher Robin to college.

Students worked for weeks to create original scripts, costumes, sets and choreography, lacing their dialog with clever puns and cultural references, and peppering their dance numbers with athletic acrobatics. Performances were judged according to five separate criteria: skits, scenery, costumes, box and banner. Seniors won top honors, with juniors, sophomores and freshmen finishing second, third and fourth, consecutively.
