For the eighth year, the Patrick Xavier Owens’ Games will be held at East Rockaway High School this Saturday, Jan. 21, beginning at 12pm. The annual event, which was organized by Patrick’s brother, Alan, is in the memory of a brave young boy who died in 1997, at the age of five.
Since its inception in 2004, the PXO Games have raised over $75,000 for the Associated School for Children with Down Syndrome (ACDS), which Patrick attended. All funds benefit ACDS directly and are used for supplies, such as computers, new technology and desks. Some of the money has even been used for rebuilding its new computer lab.
The PXO Games will include three-on-three men’s and women’s alumni games, and a basketball shot contest, which will give a participant an opportunity at winning $10,000. Anyone who would like to participate in the alumni games is highly encouraged to do so, and any questions can be directed to Alan Owens at the phone number listed below. There will also be a Sesame Street character party at 1pm.
The PXO Games will be followed by a reception at the Knights of Columbus, located at 2985 Kenneth Place in Oceanside, beginning at 5:30pm. Tickets are $100 and can be purchased at www.acds.org. Admission into the reception includes a four-hour open bar, comedy show, DJ, live music, raffles and giveaways.
Anyone who cannot attend the PXO Games but would still like to contribute a tax-deductible donation is encouraged to do so by mail: The Patrick Xavier Memorial Foundation, c/o Alan Owens, 43 Carriage Hill Lane, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. Please make all checks payable to ACDS. Any questions can be referred to Alan Owens, 845-323-9449.
“I would just like to thank everybody for their support and generous donations this year and in the past,” Alan said. “ACDS and my family are overwhelmed with the response from the community, and we are extremely thankful.”
