Quiet heist: E. Rockaway bank robbed

Posted

According to Nassau County Robbery Squad Sgt. Gary Schriffen, the East Rockaway branch of the Bank of America, on Main Street, was robbed at 2:55 p.m. Monday. Schriffen said that a man entered the bank and waited on line. "Once he was at the teller window, he presented a note," said Schriffen. According to the sergeant, who is in charge of the investigation, the teller then handed the man some money.
Schriffen said that the counter at the window was too high for the teller to see exactly where the robber put the money. Schriffen summed up the surprise withdrawal as follows: "Money was given to him, he left the note and then exited through the front door."
Schriffen added that police are reviewing video tape."No one saw which way he walked when he left the bank, and no one saw him get picked up, either," said the sergeant. "There was no gun shown, there were no shots fired, and no one was hurt." But, Schriffen explained, the wording of the note made it clear that it was a robbery.
The day after the incident, the bank was open for business as usual.
The suspect is described by eyewitnesses as a Hispanic male, around 5 feet 9 and 30 to 35 years old, with a pockmarked face and wearing a red baseball cap, possibly with a Cardinal logo on the front, and a puffy, waist-length black jacket and blue jeans.
A spokesperson for the Bank of America, which took over the former Fleet Bank in September, did not return calls for comment.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800)-244-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
