Police believe crime can be reduced when residents know their neighbors, surroundings and are visible. And when people take an interest on the events in their neighborhoods, Brown said, the opportunity for crime is reduced.
The concept of National Night out suits this community well, Brown said.
In Long Beach, the West End, Channel Park and North Park held separate events to celebrate National Night Out on Tuesday, August 6. Long Beach Police Lt. Jack Radin of the commanding uniformed force, who is in charge of community police strategies, helped each neighborhood organize the events. This year 's National Night Out theme was to prevent child abductions, and officers provided residents with tips to keep their children safe.
National Night Out has gotten bigger each year, Radin said, and with this year 's theme, the Long Beach Police Department will be working to learn the Amber Alert Program when it comes to New York. If a child is abducted, Amber Alert which has been successful in California would broadcast over radio and television every 20 minutes during the first hour. During the second hour, two broadcasts would be made. Broadcasts would continue once each hour for eight hours.
