Remembering 9/11

- The Town of Hempstead will host a sunrise memorial program for all Long Islanders at 7:30 a.m. at Town Park Point Lookout. This service is intended to offer Long Islanders an opportunity for personal reflection, shared remembrance and healing.
As a representation of the shared experience in the wake of the tragic events of 9/11, all in attendance will be invited to participate in the memorial program by writing messages or thoughts on a memento provided by the town. These items will then stand together at the base of a monument that will be created by renowned floral designers Spitz and Peck.
- The Village of East Rockaway will hold a candlelight vigil to honor those who died on September 11. Clergy from all churches in the village are invited to speak, and victims will be remembered through prayer and song. The vigil will be held on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m., Memorial Park, East Rockaway.
- Residents of the Village of Lynbrook are invited to gather on the lawn of village hall, Peninsula Boulevard and Merrick Road, on Sunday, Sept. 11, at 7:30 p.m.for a
candlelight remembrance.
- The WTC Family Center, 310 Merrick Road in Rockville Centre, is holding several events: On Thursday, Sept. 8, the "WTC/OKC Exchange" is a dinner and discussion group with people who have coped with the Oklahoma City aftermath for 10 years, from 6 to 9 p.m. On Sunday, Sept. 11, events will be held at the center from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. A remembrance breakfast and lunch will be held from 9 a.m. until noon. Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy will be guest of honor at the dedication of the memorial wall of names and prayer wall from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. There will be a viewing of the WTC Family Center video from 4 p.m. until 5 p.m. A dinner and closing memorial ceremony will be held from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Events are free and open to all families affected by the events of Sept. 11, 2001. The center is also organizing a visit to the NYS Medical Examiner's office in late September or early October, to retrieve the personal items that were used for DNA.
