Last July 14, Kevin was killed when he accidentally touched the third rail of the Long Island Rail Road tracks in Lynbrook while reportedly attempting to retrieve something. He was electrocuted by the 660-volt charge carried by the rail and died soon after at Mercy Medical Center.
Deacon Tony Cuseo, of Holy Name of Mary R.C. Church, led mourners in prayer, remembrance and a candle-lighting ceremony, as he had a year earlier after the tragedy. The service took place on Monday at 6:30 p.m. in front of a memorial created by Kevin's friends and family. The site includes pictures, religious objects, toys, flowers and the most recent additions, balloons and a Mets banner signed by Kevin's friends.
Those gathered included his mother, Nancy, his father, Steven, his brother and sister, Steven, 20, and Michelle, 13, and his 5-week-old half-sister, Mia.
Since Kevin's death, an eight-foot-high fence was erected by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority along the length of the LIRR tracks from Lyon Place to Wright Avenue in Lynbrook, also called Wilcox Alley. Half a dozen people benefited from Kevin's heart valves and corneas, which were donated upon his death.
The William L. Buck School, where he had just completed fourth grade, has a book shelf in the library and climbing ropes in the gym dedicated to Kevin.
