Remembering the late Sidney Schawelson

Sidney Schawelson, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather died peacefully on December 30. He was 88.

A truly colorful man, Schawelson was proud of his service in World War II. He was also an a WWII, an avid fisherman, golfer, opera lover, photographer and devoted family man.

“Sid brought light, laughter and passion into this world, and he will be forever deeply missed by those who know and loved him,” said his daughter, Nancy Friedman, a sales associate at the Herald newspapers.

Schawelson was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Bernice. Besides Friedman, he is also survived by her husband, Howard; another daughter, Susan Wolk, and her husband, Ken; five grandchildren: Manda, Jordan, Scott, Hayley and Samantha; and two Great-grandchildren, Dylan and Lauren.
