The village has been working on an agreement with the school district on a number of items, including the renovation of the area at the western end of the village property adjoining South Side High School. The village released the following statement on Tuesday as the Herald went to press:
The proposed renovations, which were mentioned at a recent village board briefing session, include adding 50 parking spaces, replacing old, diseased trees two-for-one with new trees and adding shrubbery, benches and other landscaping features.
Mayor Francis Murray said, “This project is a huge improvement to the area, both in beautifying the grounds and in taking 50 cars off the streets.”
The agreement has been approved by the Fire Council and is scheduled for review and approval by the Rockville Centre Board of Education. The Village Board of Trustees has approved the project in concept and principle and authorized the mayor to work out the details. After school board approval, the details of the agreement will be made public.
School Superintendent Dr. William Johnson has told us that the tree removal caused no problems, disruptions or complaints at the high school.
Four trees have been removed so far; a fifth may also come down today and others may come down as well, if they are diseased. All will be replaced two-for-one.
