Riptide falls to Toronto, 15-7

A short memory will serve the New York Riptide well following a rough outcome Saturday night at Nassau Coliseum.

Veteran Collum Crawford, who ranks 10th on the National Lacrosse League’s all-time scoring list, returned from injury and scored the game-opening goal as part of a strong Riptide start but the visiting Toronto Rock dominated thereafter in a convincing 15-7 victory.

Toronto outshot New York by a 71 to 41 margin, with East Meadow native Tom Schreiber accounting for 20, and won 20 of 26 draws on the way to evening its record at 2-2. Schreiber’s 7 points (2 goals, 5 assists) led the Rock, which also got multigoal games from Stephen Keogh (hat trick), Zach Manns, Mitch de Snoo and Corey Small.

“It’s frustrating because down two goals at the half, we were right there,” Riptide head coach Dan Ladouceur said. “We had a tough time 5-on-5 and scored only two goals. They also got a lot of offensive rebounds, especially in the second half, and we kind of wore down.”

New York raced to a 3-0 lead with goals from Crawford (5:19 into the game), Kevin Brownell and Scott Dominey before Small got Toronto on the board. Crawford, Dominey and Larson Sundown had two goals apiece.

Trailing 3-1 entering the second quarter, the Rock, playing its first game since Dec. 17, went on a roll. It scored the first four goals of the quarter and held a 7-5 halftime edge.

It was all Toronto in the third quarter. Keogh scored all three of his goals as part of a 7-0 explosion that saw the Rock chase Riptide starting goaltender Steven Orleman (42 saves) and take a hefty 14-5 lead into the fourth.

“Every game is a new game and we know what we can bring to the table, we just haven’t done that yet this year,” Orleman said.

The Riptide sank to 0-3, with each loss coming at home, and will look to crack into the win column for the first time this season on Sunday when it hosts Rochester at 3 p.m. The Knighthawks are 4-0.

“Rochester is playing with confidence and has a veteran defensive core,” Ladouceur said. “We’ve got our work cut out.”

 Riptide partner with Warrior Lacrosse
The Riptide and Warrior Lacrosse announced a partnership focused around Warrior athlete, and reigning National Lacrosse League Rookie of the Year, Jeff Teat.

The community-based collaboration will be highlighted by a “Teat's Warriors” program that will include tickets being provided to underprivileged communities who want to be exposed to the sport of lacrosse. Additionally, Teat will take part in multiple stick stringing clinics for children at Lacrosse Unlimited locations on Long Island with scheduled dates coming soon. The Riptide and Warrior partnership will also include unique lacrosse content for fans to enjoy and engage in.

“Warrior is proud to sponsor 'Teat's Warriors' section for New York Riptide home games,” said Gabe O' Neil, Warrior Brand Marketing Manager. “Young athletes and fans deserve to experience lacrosse played at the highest level and we, along with Jeff, are happy to make that a bit more special. Jeff is a great role model for young players to look up to both on and off the field of play and is pumped for this initiative. Although we cannot be at every game to meet Teat’s Warriors, you can count on Jeff to make an appearance and thank these future stars for their support of him and the entire Riptide organization.”

“We are honored to partner with Warrior and our own Jeff Teat to help bring children closer to the great game of lacrosse at Nassau Coliseum," said Rich Lisk, President, New York Riptide. "Our organization is committed to the community and always doing our part in growing the game on Long Island and throughout the area. With Jeff, our fans have the opportunity to see one of the great lacrosse players on the planet and an individual who constantly strives to extend himself to his neighbors within the community.”
