Road improvement projects have commenced on the section of Pendroy Street, from Oakdale Road to Newbridge Road, Hampton Street, from Oakdale Road to Newbridge Road, and Oakdale Road, from Marlboro Street on south. A little further west, the stretch of Durham Road that runs from Luddington Road to North Jerusalem Road is also being revamped.
"These streets, from my experiences driving down them, were in need of road improvement," said Hempstead Town Councilman Gary Hudes (R-Levittown), noting their potholes and torn pavement. "They were not in good condition."
Hudes said the roads in the vicinity of the heavily trafficked St. Raphael's Roman Catholic Church--Pendroy Street, Oakdale Road and Hampton Road--were particularly in bad shape.
Over the next several weeks the roads will be repaved, new concrete curbs and driveway aprons will be installed, pedestrian access ramps will be placed at all intersections, and any disturbed grass areas will be restored. Some sidewalks will be ripped up and repaved as well, Hudes said.
Work on Pendroy Street, Oakdale Road and Hampton Road has been underway for a couple of weeks, Hudes said, with the Durham Road project recently kicking off. Construction should be completed in about a month, Hudes said.
Meanwhile, during the day certain sections of those roads might be closed off to all traffic except the homeowners living on the block, so drivers should be advised to take alternate routes while in the area. At night, all roads being worked on will be open. Pedestrians should also note that sidewalks being repaired will be closed off.
"Improving Hempstead Town's infrastructure is a key priority in ensuring that our neighborhoods remain great places to live," Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray said. "Continuing to invest in community upgrades is another way in which we are making great neighborhoods even better."
