Community events

Symphony concert

On Nov. 14 at 8 p.m., the South Shore Symphony, under the direction of Scott Jackson Wiley and guest conductor Alex Guzman, will perform at the South Side Middle School on Hillside Avenue. The 65-member symphony orchestra will present Mendelssohn’s “Italian Symphony,”

R. Strauss’s “Four Last Songs,” Wagner’s “Overture to Dei Meistersinger” and will feature Soprano Michelle Pretto. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors, members of the RVC Guild for the Arts and students. Children under the age of 18 are free. For tickets or information, call (516) 616-3610.

Open House at C.A.T.S.

The Children’s Athletic Training School, 188 Maple Ave. will host an Open House on Nov. 14 to promote a new program being offered in January. The open house will include pizza and a demonstration of new music classes. For more information, call (516) 763-1299 or visit www. catsny.com.

Tony Brull Foundation fundraiser

The Tommy Brull Foundation, Inc. is holding its 2nd annual fundraiser at Cannon's Blackthorn, 49 N. Village Ave on Nov. 14 from 3-6 p.m. $60 pp includes open bar, live music, raffles,  food. Funds raised will benefit Camp ANCHOR, The Kevin McDermott Fund and The Young Autism Program.

AHRC Sunday Brunch

The AHRC Rockville Centre Auxiliary cordially invites the community to a Sunday Brunch on Nov. 15 from noon- 3:30 pm at Alias Smith & Jones, 2863 Woods Avenue in Oceanside. The cost is $35 per person ($7 of which is a charitable contribution to AHRC). Gentlemen are welcome. Our Common Heritage

Molloy College’s Institute for Interfaith Dialogue will present “Our Common Heritage,” a program which blends Irish and Jewish culture through music. The free event that is open to the public will take place on Nov. 15 at 3 p.m.

Fortnightly Club meeting

On Nov. 17, Fortnightly members will recount meaningful encounters that added joy to their lives. The meeting begins at 1:30 p.m. at the St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 200 Hempstead Ave. Refreshments will be served after the program.

RVC Mercy League crafts

The community is invited to "Give A Little of Yourself" and spread some Christmas spirit by helping assemble a craft to surprise patients on Christmas morning. The event takes place in the hospital’s Mercy League Lounge (across from the Emergency Room) on Nov. 17 at 8 p.m. For more information, call (917) 921-0911

Village Art Club Art demonstration

On Nov. 19 from 7-9 p.m., artist Don Slapo will paint a pastel portrait at the meeting at Rockville Centre Library, 221 N. Village Ave.

Defensive Driving Course

Mercy Medical Center is offering the Empire Safety Council’s Defensive Driving Course on Nov. 21, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Mercy League Lounge located across from the entrance to the hospital’s Emergency Department. Upon completion of this course, participants are eligible for 10 percent off their motor vehicle insurance for three years and/or a reduction of points from their drivers license. Bowling Night benefit for Friends of the RVC Public Library

On Nov 22, from 12:30 - 3:30 p.m. at the RVC Lanes on Maple Ave.The cost is $10 per person which includes bowling shoes; 100 percent of the proceeds will go to the Friends of the Library to be used to support Library programs. All ages are welcome. There will be raffles, 50/50, free bowling coupons, free gifts for all kids. Food and beverages available. RVC PTA Post Prom Holiday Boutique and Crafts Fair

Purchase gifts for everyone on your list at the annual holiday boutique and crafts fair on Nov. 24 from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. in South Side High School’s gym. All proceeds support the senior class of 2010. For more information, contact Peggy Mulcahy at (516) 536-4829. 

Thanksgiving Day Open House and Free Dinner

RVC Mercy League Holiday House Tour

The annual Holiday House Tour will take place on Dec. 4 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Tickets, for $35 , are on sale at the Garden Gate (323 Sunrise Highway) after Nov. 23. New program: “Connor and Friends”

The Rec Center is offering a new playtime activity on Nov. 22 from 2:30-4 p.m. This program is staffed by trained recreation center personnel to provide a fun and safe activity environment for children with children with special needs, including autism and Down Syndrome. These playdates are offered once a month. Interested families may contact Paul Lawless at MPLawless@verizon.net. Reservations are necessary.

Operation Christmas Child

The Rec Center is collecting school supplies and toiletries for needy children. Donations, which must be in their original packaging, may be made Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the center. Call the center for more information.

Winter programs

The Recreation Center will start taking reservations for winter programs beginning Nov. 9. Detailed flyers are available at the center.

Nursery School

There are some limited openings remaining in the morning pre-kindergarten classes which meet five day a week from 9-11:30 a.m., the afternoon pre-kindergarten classes which meet Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 12:15-2:45 p.m. and in the pre-pre-kindergarten classes which meet Tuesday and Thursday from 12:15-2:45. Special Events:

AARP Defensive Driving Course

Nov. 5 and 12 at 6 p.m. This course is open to Sandel members and residents of RVC. $12 for AARP members & $14. for non-AARP members. Call the center for availability.

Food Collection

During the months of November and December members of the community are encouraged to bring donations of non-perishable foods to the Sandel Senior Center. Donations will be distributed to needy families in our community.

Thanksgiving Luncheon

Nov. 18 at noon. Members of the Sandel Center take this opportunity to give thanks for another wonderful year. A traditional feast of roast turkey with “all the trimmings” is served. $5 pp ($6 day of event) Registration required.

Thanksgiving and Holiday Crafts Fair

Nov. 20 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Find the perfect hostess gift for your Thanksgiving dinner. Then, get an early start on your holiday shopping with hand-made hats, scarves, sweaters & afghans. Seasonal wreaths, home decor items, designer jewelry and bric a brac from “grannies attic” will also be available. Returning this year – the famous Sandel “cookie walk.”

Lions Recycle

The Sandel Center is now an official drop-off point for used or broken prescription eyeglasses, non-prescription sunglasses, old hearing aids and old cell phones. Donations can be brought to the Senior Center Monday - Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Tuesday Topics

Nov. 10 at 11 a.m. “Trusts and Other Age-Based Investment Strategies,” presented by Bill Sepe, Senior Advisor from the Senior Financial Center, Inc.

Sandel Senior Men’s Club

The club meets the first and third Tuesday of every month at 10 a.m. for breakfast and business. At 11 a.m., when available, guest speakers discuss topics of interest to men. A variety of trips & programs are scheduled for July and August.

Social Work Services

Social Work supervisor Wendy Weinstock, MSW, is available for private consultation on a range of Social Work services such as housing and transportation as well as individual and group counseling. Call Wendy at 516-536-1162 for an appointment.

Religious Events

The Parish of St. Agnes Cathedral welcomes all to its monthly Mass for special needs children of all ages and their families. The next scheduled Mass is on Nov. 21. All of these Masses are held on Saturdays at 5 p.m. in the Lower Hall of the Msgr. Melton Auditorium which is handicapped accessible through the Parish Center.

Interfaith Thanksgiving Service

The Rockville Centre Clergy Association, a consortium of Christian and Jewish clergy, is sponsoring an Interfaith Thanksgiving Service, to be held at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, 71 North Village Avenue, in Rockville Centre, on Tuesday November 24, at 7.30pm. The Rev. William Koenig, Dean of St. Agnes Cathedral will be the homiliest. Music will be provided by the Ascension choir and members of choirs of the sponsoring congregations. A reception will follow the service in the parish hall. All are welcome. Come and share in thankful praise for all of God's blessings.
