Rockville Centre Crime Watch - Nov. 12

People named in Crime Watch items as having been arrested and charged with violations or crimes are only suspected of committing those acts of which they are accused. They are all presumed to be innocent of those charges until and unless found guilty in a court of law.

Arrests

James Young, 36, of Terrance Street, Hempstead, was arrested on Oct. 30 and charged with driving while intoxicated, criminal mischief and escape. Police say they arrested Young at the scene of a minor auto accident at N. Park Avenue and Merrick Road after they determined that he had been driving while intoxicated. While being transported in a police car after his arrest, police say Young kicked and damaged a rear window of the cruiser and when officers stopped to prevent him from doing this, he broke fee of an officer's grasp, ran into traffic and had to be chased down on foot and subdued.

Harassment (on-going investigation)

On Oct. 31 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., three residents: two on Harvard Avenue and one on Hamilton Street, reported to police that they had found pieces of paper in their yards containing anti-Semitic language. The pieces of paper were collected as evidence and all three cases have been referred to the Nassau County Police Detectives and Rockville Centre Anti-Crime Units for investigation

Larcenies

At 12:50 p.m. on Oct. 21, an employee of the Public Storage facility, 484 Sunrise Highway, told police that on Sept. 30, someone stole $1,290 in cash from a bank deposit bag.

On Oct. 21 at 6:45 p.m., the owner of Kings Laundry, 61A N. Village Ave., told police that at about 11:30 a.m. an unidentified man entered the business and stole a Long Island Homeless Pets donation jar that contained approximately $5 in cash.

On Oct. 21 at 7:40 p.m., an employee of the Rockville Skilled Nursing facility, 50 Maine Ave., reported to police that at 7:15 p.m., a former employee of an oxygen tank vendor stole 12 empty oxygen tanks from a storage trailer outside the building.

At 9:50 a.m. on Oct. 22, a Riverside Drive resident told police that someone entered his car, which was parked in front of his house and stole a leatherman multi-tool and laser pointer from inside the vehicle.

On Oct. 22 at 10 a.m., a resident of Oxford Place reported to police that someone entered her car, which was parked in her driveway and stole a change purse and approximately $7 in cash from inside the vehicle. Police arrested a 23-year-old man on Sherwood Road at about 2 a.m. who was found to be in possession of the victim’s change purse.

On Oct. 22 at 10 a.m., a Locust Avenue resident told police that someone entered his car, which was parked in his driveway and stole approximately $5 in cash from inside the vehicle.

On Oct. 22 at 11:50 a.m., a resident on Loel Court reported to police that someone broke into his car, which was parked in his driveway, and stole an Apple headset device from inside the vehicle.

Also on Oct. 22, at 1:50 p.m., a resident on Hendrickson Avenue reported to police that someone got into her car, which was parked in her driveway, and stole her wallet containing $1,040 in cash, $1,000 in gift cards, personal identification and two credit cards from inside the vehicle.

At 5 p.m. that same day, a woman reported that someone entered her car, which was parked in the lot at Mercy Medical Center, 1000 N. Village Ave., by breaking a rear passenger side window, and stole a pocketbook and several textbooks from inside the vehicle.

At the same time on that same day, a man, whose car was also parked in the lot at Mercy, told police that it was also entered, by breaking the driver’s side window, and that a briefcase containing a Blackberry, cell phone, electronic organizer and computer flash drive was stolen.

On Oct. 23 at 10:45 a.m., a man reported to police that someone stole his unattended cell phone from a table inside the St. Agnes Parish Center on N. Village Ave.

On Oct. 30, at 10:50 a.m., the owner of Masters & Company Florist, 26 S. Village Ave., told police that someone stole a donation jar, containing approximately $200 in cash, from inside the store.

At 3:50 p.m. on Nov. 1, a resident of Vanderveer Court reported to police that someone stole his son's bicycle from his unlocked garage.

Village code violation

Stanley Hirsh, 86, of Island Parkway West, Island Park, received an appearance ticket on Oct. 15 at 9:10 a.m. charging him with disturbing garbage in a recycling bin in front of 138 Bulson Road.
