Carwash fundraiser

Support South Side High School's Varsity Cheerleaders on Aug. 24 and 25 as they host a carwash fundraiser at the RVC Recreation Center from 10 a.m. — 4 p.m. They're charging $5 for smaller cars and $7 for larger vehicles.

T-shirt fundraiser

South Side High School Boys Soccer Team Fan "Shot at Redemption" T-shirts are on sale now. To support the team, you can drop off your order at the RVC Recreation Center, 111 North Oceanside Road. All deliveries will be made the week of Aug 27-31. Shirts are $15 for each size: Youth Small, Medium and Large and Adult Small, Medium, Large, & X-Large. Open House

Defensive Driving Class at the Church of the Ascension

A National Safety Council defensive driving course for insurance and point reduction will be given at the Church of the Ascension, 71 North Village Ave. on Sept. 8 from 8:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. For information and to register, call (631) 360-9720. The cost is $45.

Eagle Scout Centennial Parade

Long Island’s Boy Scouts of America will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Eagle Scout Award with a parade and ceremonies on Sept. 8 in the village where, in 1912, Arthur R. Eldred was the first Boy Scout to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. The Theodore Roosevelt Council of the Boy Scouts of America is sponsoring the Eagle Scout Centennial Parade that will step-off at 10 a.m. Units of Long Island Boy Scout Troops, BSA leaders, Eagle Scouts and local officials will march the parade route from Randall Ave. Parking Field 2 to Arthur R. Eldred Park at corner of North Centre Avenue and Parkwood Court where a commemoration ceremony will take place. Casting call: Open audition

for classically-trained dancers

and singers

On Sept. 8 and 9 at 10 a.m. for dancers and 12 p.m. for singers, the Madison Theatre at Molloy College, 1000 Hempstead Ave. will hold a audition for its Family Concert Series Presents …”An Afternoon of Pas De Deux” with the Children’s Orchestra Society (COS) Orchestra. The performance date is Nov. 4 at 3 p.m. The audition is open to classically trained ballet, pointe and jazz dancers ages 15-to-24, both male and female. RVC Homemakers Club

Fall is almost here and members of the Rockville Centre Homemakers will hold their first meeting after the summer recess on Sept. 11 at 10 a.m. in the RVC Recreation Center, 111 N. Oceanside Road. The Homemakers is a non-profit organization that goes above and beyond to help local groups, like food pantries, abused women and veterans' families. They give crocheted hats for premies to local hospitals, shawls and lap robes to cancer patients and manufacturers coupons to veterans families, collecting $75,000 of those last year. The Homemakers are a group of talented women who meet each Tuesday to share their knowledge of cooking, sewing, knitting and various crafts with other members. They welcome anyone interested to check them out and become one of the newest members of the club. If you have any questions, call Karen Alterson at (516) 318-6771.

Nassau Veterans Resource Center

Help for veterans and returning servicemen and women in filing claims, getting whatever federal, state and local benefits are due them, finding jobs. Also collecting all forms of clothing and toiletries for homeless veterans and the men and women still serving overseas. Paintings by Jack Grimando

Helen Kraus Community Room and Small Community Room

Grimando’s work has as its theme the landscapes, seascapes and village life reminiscent of old world scenes inspired by travel experiences. His paintings, rich in detail, convey the artist’s appreciation for the beauty around him and in his imagination.

Grimando studied graphic illustration at The Pratt Institute for Art Studies, and served in the U.S. Army where he illustrated training aids and manuals. He was an illustrator for the U.S. Postal Service for 37 years creating lobby murals and training manuals. Grimando has been featured in articles and has won various awards for his artistic endeavors with the postal service.

Today Grimando is retired and a member of the Suburban Art League, the Oyster Bay Arts Council, the art Guild at Elderfields, the Village Art Club in Rockville Centre and the Brookhaven Art Council. His award-winning paintings have been exhibited in various shows, businesses and libraries across Long Island.

Kids Fest

The annual Kids Fest free open house celebration at the Rec Center is scheduled for Sept. 15 from noon to 4 p.m. As always, there will be refreshments, give-aways, pony rides and other attractions for Rockville Centre families to enjoy. Representatives from all the village's sports organizations will attend, as well as the Rockville Centre Police and Fire departments, the Post Office, the Library, the Guild for the Arts, the Lions Club and many others.

Fall Nursery School

There are a limited number of openings in the Fall 2012 nursery school classes at the John A. Anderson Recreation Center, 111 North Oceanside Road for children entering kindergarten in September 2013 or 2014. Classes follow the Rockville Centre public school holiday schedule. Openings are in the morning and afternoon classes. There are also opportunities for extended day programs.

Fall program registration

Registration is now being accepted for the Fall programs that begin the week of Sept. 17. All registrations are first-come, first-served and all participants must have valid 2012-2013 Recreation Center membership card. New programs offered this year include: Happy Piano, Baby Bounce & Jamboree, Roll Around Fun Card, Bricks for Kids, Jr. Gourmet Cooking, Artful Adventures, Fencing, Schoolhouse Chess, All 4 One Yoga, as well as the Rec. Center’s competition and training gymnastics teams. Detailed flyers are available at the Rec Center or by calling 678-9338 or 9339.

Gymnastics tryouts

Tryouts for the Rec Center gymnastics teams will be held the week of Sept. 10. Candidates must pre-register. A parents meeting is scheduled for Sept. 8 at 11 a.m. Call Ginger at (516) 678-9238 for information.

Bicycle Safety Week

The RVC Parks and Recreation Department and the Police Department, in cooperation with the RVC P.T.A., will again offer the Cycle With Care program at the five elementary schools during September.

Anyone wishing to register a bicycle must see that it is equipped with strong brakes, a warning device (bell, horn or whistle), front and rear reflectors at least 3-inches square, reflectors on pedals, and reflective tires or wheels with reflectors on the spokes. The inspections will take place at Wilson and Riverside schools on Sept. 11; at Covert and Watson schools on Sept. 12; and at Hewitt School on Sept. 13.

Part-time jobs available

Residents who are at least 16 years old may apply to work part-time on weekday and weekend programs, parties and special events.

The club meets the first and third Tuesday of every month at 10 a.m. for breakfast and business. At 11 a.m., guest speakers discuss topics of interest to men.

Mass for Deceased Children
