Display Cases
A Ship to Remember
The display cases of the library feature a commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the sinking of The Titanic. The Titanic left South Hampton, England on April 10, 1912. She carried some of the world’s wealthiest, as well as immigrants who wanted to create a new life in America. On April 14, 1912 at 11:40 p.m. The Titanic hit an iceberg. Although the ship had the latest safety-feature technology, it didn’t carry enough lifeboats, and nearly 1,200 people lost their lives. This display is a timeline of the trip. The first case is the ship afloat, the beauty of the ship, the grandeur of its surroundings and life on it. The second is the ship as it flounders and sinks. It has images of survivors, those waiting for rescue on the lifeboats, the NY Times front page article and information about those who died. The final section is the Titanic on the ocean floor. Is it a grave or a memorial? What should be done with it? Should artifacts be removed?
